How to Replace a Light Switch in 4 Easy!

Updated: Feb 26, 2023

Introduction:

Replacing a light switch may seem intimidating, but with the right tools and safety precautions, it's quite easy.

So don't be intimidated - follow these steps, and you'll have a new light switch installed in no time.

Step 1:

Shut off the power to the circuit: Before you do anything else, turn off the power to the circuit.

This is probably the most important step – for your safety and the longevity of your new switch.

To do this, head to your breaker box and flip off the switch corresponding to that specific light fixture.

Once you're sure there is no power going to that particular circuit, it's time to move on to step two.

Step 2:

Remove Old Switch: Once you're certain that there is no power running through the circuit, go ahead and unscrew your old switch from its mounting plate with a screwdriver or drill.

Remove any wiring connected to it as well – if any wires are connected, they should be easily visible.

Be careful not to let them touch each other while they're exposed!

Step 3:

Install New Switch: After removing the old switch, install your new one by connecting its wires in place of those you removed from the original switch – make sure all connections are secure before moving on.

Then attach your new switch to its mounting plate using screws or nails (depending on what type of hardware came with your new switch).

Step 4:

Turn Power Back On & Test New Switch: Finally, go back over to your breaker box and turn the power back on for that particular circuit.

Test out your new switch by flipping it up and down – if everything looks good then congratulations!

You've successfully installed a new light switch!

Conclusion:

It may seem intimidating at first, but replacing a light switch isn't as difficult as it seems!

With just four simple steps – shut off power; remove the old switch; install a new switch; turn the power back on & test.

Homeowners can easily replace their switches without having to hire an electrician or handyman.
